The units described here are either standard Spacek Labs products or they are a small sample of many special designs produced to specific customer requirements. |
Basically, the frequency converters are divided into low power downconverters or high power upconverters. |
For downconverters we recommend singly-balanced configuration optimized over specified frequencies. Such a customized mixer might be actually less expensive, yet performs better over the relatively narrow specified frequency range than the standard wide bandwidth units. For the lowest possible noise, liquid nitrogen cooled mixers are available, which give a DSB noise figure of about 1.0dB at Ka-Band. |
For high-level upconverters the configuration is either singly-balanced configuration with a pair of high-barrier diodes, or doubly-balanced with 2 pairs of standard diodes. |

Although downconverters can also be used as upconverters, for applications requiring either high output power or single-sideband output the upconverters described below were developed. These units are either single-balanced mixers with integrated output filter to suppress the undesired sideband, or they are doubly-balanced SSB modulators with integrated hybrids in which the undesired sideband is suppressed by phasing. |
